Acceptance Testing

A system may be designed to do more than what any single customer cares about. An acceptance test is a subset of a validation test where the customer has said in advance what will be acceptable. When the acceptance test is passed then the customer is usually under an obligation to pay for it.

If an acceptance test is not agreed to early in the product life cycle then the customer may be impossible to please and hence the system is not likely to be paid for.

Before major investment in implementation has begun you sit down with the customer and agree to what subset of the requirements (or validation) that are requisite for acceptance.
