Simulation

Simulation is about imitating something that exists or pretending that something exists. It is usually a model where certain uninteresting characteristics are left out like maybe all the physical parts. Simulators are the tools of modelers and trainers. A trainer uses a simulator when the real thing is too expensive to let just anyone use. A developer uses a simulator to help visualize a proposed system.

Emulation

Emulation is copying actual behavior.

A new computer model can emulate an older model for example; to run old video games. But when the new computer is emulating one that does not exist yet, we call that simulation.

The Difference

In antiquity, simulation also meant to deceive (this is a simulation and not genuine) and had a negative connotation whereas emulation meant you were trained well (he emulates his professor) and had a positive connotation. Systems engineers often use simulation for testing user interfaces.
