Epigenetics

Epigenetics is most often understood in biochemical engineering. It is a term that refers to the adaptive mechanisms of genetics. Literally it means "upon genetics" or a layer of development beyond what is explained by genetics. Sometimes people refer to epigenetics when talking about "the sum is greater than the parts" or emergent behavior. Epigenesis is really about the management mechanisms cells employ when they differentiate into different cell types. Cells seem to respond to messages from other cells to determine their structure and consequent function.

It is adapted to Systems Engineering to infer a rigor of management to control configurability.
